We are now 7 weeks into the New Year – 2010; actually, 13% of the year has already passed us by. So let me ask you a question, are you on course for achieving what you intend to this year? In other words, have you been paying attention to your goals? It’s probably a good idea to pull them out, brush them off and take a “look-see”.
If you are not achieving what you have planned out and are capable of achieving, it is probably because your goals are not clearly enough defined. It’s not enough to state you intend to earn more in 2010 then you did in 2009; you must have clearly defined goals for everything.
Lack of clarity is the number one reason most professionals fail at accomplishing what they set out to (that and they give up too easily). Let me continue with the above example – earning more commissions in 2010. What exactly does this mean? If you are successful with this initiative you probably have earning substantially more in mind. But you would still be successful even if you only earned $100 more!
It might mean you only earned $1 more – but you still would have accomplished your goal. Are you catching on now? You must be specific – Earn 50% more in 2010 then 2009; even dare to calculate the EXACT number.
Let’s say you have a figure of $450,000 in mind; OK, then be clear about it. Write it in your 2010 goals. Think about how this will happen. Expand the goal by stating what action will be required on your behalf.
The second reason professionals such as you fail with goals is because they don’t take the time to be consistent and accurate with the measurement of the progress of these goals.
You MUST be mindful to check your goals weekly (even daily) while determining what needs to happen (ACTION) to complete and accomplish your goals.
And finally, you absolutely must hold yourself accountable for your progress (or lack thereof) and behavior towards this accomplishment.
So if you aren’t earning what you set out to, well. . .it’s YOUR fault. What do you need to be and how do you need to behave to correct your course? Stop, identify and implement! And double-check those goals. Now you’ll get there, really!
